Organizational setting

The World Maritime University (WMU) was founded in 1983 within the framework of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, as its premier center of excellence for maritime postgraduate education, research and capability development. The University offers unique postgraduate programmes, conducts wide-ranging research in maritime and ocean- related studies, and advances maritime capability development in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The WMU–Lloyd´s Register Foundation Maritime Observatory is a new strategic initiative established to strengthen the availability, analysis and use of high-quality evidence in support of maritime policy and decision-making. The Observatory will combine data analytics, evidence synthesis and policy-relevant research to generate insights on important and emerging maritime issues.

The Data Analyst will support the establishment and operation of the WMU-LRF Maritime Observatory across the full analytical cycle: identification, acquisition, management, analysis and visualization of maritime data and the development of evidence-based knowledge products such as dashboards, models, reports and briefs.

The incumbent will report to the Head of Data and Insights (WMU-LRF Maritime Observatory) and work closely with other members of the Observatory team to develop its data and analytical capabilities. The position requires a combination of technical data skills, analytical curiosity and an interest in applying data and evidence to maritime policy questions.

This is an opportunity to join a strategic initiative, the Observatory, at its founding stage. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to contribute directly to the development of its data infrastructure, analytical methods, AI workflows and knowledge products. It is an opportunity to shape how the Observatory works from the outset, and contribute to its work supporting international maritime policy-making.

Main purpose

Under the supervision of the Head of Data and Insights, the Data Analyst will:

• support the identification, acquisition, collection and integration of relevant maritime datasets from public, commercial and partner sources;

• clean, structure, validate and maintain datasets used by the Observatory;

• undertake quantitative and statistical analyses in support of Observatory projects and knowledge products;

• develop data visualizations, dashboards and other tools for communicating analytical findings;

• contribute to the development and maintenance of the Observatory;s data infrastructure,including databases and data management processes;

• support the development of methodologies and analytical frameworks for examining maritime trends and emerging issues;

• contribute to evidence synthesis, literature reviews and the integration of quantitative and qualitative evidence;

• design, build and continuously improve AI-assisted and automated workflows for data processing, analysis, evidence synthesis and reporting within the Observatory’s quality assurance framework;

• contribute to the development of recurring analytical products, including composite indices and

• benchmarking exercises;

• draft and contribute to reports, policy briefs, presentations and other knowledge products for technical and non-technical audiences;

• assist in identifying data gaps and opportunities for new analytical work;

• contribute to collaboration with data providers, research institutions, international organizations, maritime administrations, industry and other partners;

• support the documentation of datasets, analytical methods and procedures to ensure transparency, reproducibility and appropriate data governance;

• follow developments in data analytics, visualization, artificial intelligence and other relevant digital technologies and explore their appropriate application within the Observatory; and perform other duties related to the development and operation of the Maritime Observatory as required.

Minimum requirements – education, experience and language skills

Education

Essential

• An advanced university degree (Master´s degree or equivalent) in data science, statistics computer science, economics, engineering, maritime studies, transport studies, social sciences or another discipline with a strong quantitative or analytical component.

Desirable

• Formal training or demonstrated specialization in data analytics, statistics, data science machine learning, artificial intelligence, data visualization or related fields.

• Knowledge of maritime transport, shipping, maritime safety, sustainability or another maritime-related field would be an advantage.

• A PhD (post doc) in a related area or an ambition to continue developing academically, including through doctoral studies.

Experience

Essential

• Relevant professional, academic or research experience in data collection, management, analysis or visualization.

• Demonstrated experience working with quantitative datasets and applying analytical methods to practical or research questions.

• Ability to work effectively with analytical and/or programming tools (e.g., Python, R, SQL, Power BI, Tableau or comparable technologies).

• Demonstrated ability to make productive and critical use of AI tools for analytical work, including orchestration of agents.

• Ability to present analytical finding in a clear, well-structured manner for both specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Desirable

• Experience developing dashboards, databases or other data-driven analytical products.

• Experience designing automated or AI-assisted workflows, integration or orchestrations across multiple tools and systems.

• Experience integrating data from multiple sources and working with large or complex datasets.

• Experience applying data analytics to policy, transport, maritime, sustainability or other interdisciplinary questions.

• Experience working in an international organization, university, research institution or other multicultural environment.

• Familiarity with data governance, security, and reproducible analytical workflows would be an advantage.

Languages

Essential

• Fluency in spoken and written English.

Desirable

• Knowledge of another United Nations language would be an advantage.

WMU offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at the applicable P1 level (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), with a variable post adjustment, dependency benefits, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses, as applicable under the relevant rules.
